After reading the play and watching it as well, I was very impressed with Shakespeare’s writing and the work he put into the play. It was a whirlwind of emotions just to end with so much sadness. I chose this piece because I have always enjoyed learning about Shakespeare and his plays. I also thought that the complexities of the themes and lessons throughout the play, it would make for a better analysis. There is so much to learn from all of the different characters, especially Hamlet. I will say that I am not typically one to indulge in reading a tragedy. I have always enjoyed romance novels more than anything. However, I have recently started enjoying action movies (mainly for my husband’s sake). On that note, I enjoyed all of the actions throughout the play, and I also got my taste of romance as well. The climax was a rollercoaster and from then on, my eyes were glued to both the page and the screen. It made me feel like I was in the story with them. I was shaking from fear of what might happen next. I will say I can’t really connect with the characters on a personal level, but I do understand and sympathize with some of what they went through. As I said before, Shakespeare tried to connect with the reader/watcher by providing us with themes that everyone goes through, such as grief, doubt, and a search for one’s true self. I understand Hamlet’s and Ophelia’s grief from losing their father, because I lost my uncle, who I would consider my second father, since we were that close. Of course, I’ve experienced doubt and know what it’s like to feel lost with who you are and where you are supposed to go next. That is why I enjoyed this play so much. Shakespeare plays on our emotions and leaves us wondering about what’s next.
